Is the spelling seatbelt or seat belt? - Australian spelling
I often use both the spellings seatbelt and seat belt and wonder which
one is the preferred Australian English spelling.
I've found the best approach is to refer to the authoritative references
when in doubt about the preferred Australian English spelling of a word.
The Macquarie Dictionary and the Australian Oxford dictionary both
list seatbelt as the preferred spelling. Given both the authoritative references
agree, you can be fairly confident seatbelt is the preferred Australian English spelling.
A further check of Google for sites ending in .au returns 9 million results for seatbelt and
3.37 million results for seat belt, which further supports seatbelt being the preferred Australian English spelling.
